I have just come across this. This is what I intended to say about my father at the graveside., but because the priest did not want it or the catholic church diocese in Navan said that these no longer can be made (because apparently some people have been making libelous accusations about other parties) – and I don’t know whether or not this is true. Anyway this is what we wanted to say about the wonderful man who was and IS our father:
I’d like to say a few words about Barry, a man whom the word ‘big’ described in many ways:

A big man,
A big presence,
Big Hands, hands like shovels,
A big heart.

A gentle man, or to use the words said so often in the last couple of days, and so many days before this, a gentle giant, whose loving heart, ready wit, ever present smile, and hearty laugh made one of life’s best companions.

A man with big shoes, hard to fill, and not just because they were size 14. They trod many paths, he filled many roles, throughout his life to many people, as son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. And in all those roles, fulfilled with integrity, dignity, and compassion.

So Barry, goodbye, from all of us here, whose lives are immeasurably enriched for having know you.

Dad we miss you and we love you.
